NewTEL95
NewTEL95 is a TELNET terminal emulator for the Nokia Communicator
9500/9300. The terminal engine, and user interface are based on the
successful newTELnet 9200 product.
NewTEL95 is widely used by systems and network managers to access
their equipment remotely, and for this reason it also includes a PING, and TraceRoute
engine. The user can test the network connectivity and performance
using the same application that he later uses to log into the host.
The connections can be made by either the WLAN (9500) or via the GPRS/GSM connection.
Another area in which newTEL95 is often used, is the first level management
of networking and systems. This needs a simple serial connection. NewTEL95 now
supports connection via Bluetooth to a serial dongle, giving service
personnel an ideal way of quickly accessing their management ports.
NewTEL95 Users are often responsible for large networks, and systems
and need extra tools to help them manage their networks. The PING
function in newTEL95 gives the user a analysis of the response time
to a specific host in the network. If he needs more information about the
path times, and route, he can select the TraceRoute mode. NewTEL95
will then display all the hosts in the path to the selected host, if
possible with their translated name, and the response times to them.
It will continue measuring this path providing the user with a real
result on which to base networking decisions on. The analysis display
will focus attention on any response times that are at variance to
the average by showing them in special colours.
One of the most important design considerations was ease of use, for
this reason the buttons can be configured by the user to allow easy
entry of standard texts, or even program functions. Any one of 2 sets
of buttons can be selected for these functions. A standard text, or
escape sequence is entered in a very simple form, during which any
control character can also be easily entered. The user can therefore
configure the complete screen for his optimal data entry environment.
NewTEL95 stores the last 10 remote internet addresses connected
to, to help the user easily select different hosts without having
to enter their addresses for each connection. The communicator screen
is smaller than its terminal counterpart. This typically results in
the user having to scroll backwards and forwards to see the complete
screen. Normal scrollbars can be used for this. Just drag the contents
of the screen by pressing the chr key, and the direction block. The
scrollbars can even be completely removed from the screen leaving
a larger terminal area than before. Another feature which can ease
data entry is the "follow" cursor function. When this is selected
the program will automatically scroll to follow the cursor. Depending
on the program running on the host, this can be an advantage or not.
For this reason, this function is normally placed on one of the buttons
for easy access.
NewTEL95 supports all standard ANSI, VT2xx, VT100, VT52, TVI950,
WSYE 60 and ADM3A escape sequences. All data can be traced into a logfile to help diagnose any
communication problems.
NewTEL95 can be loaded from the network and fully tested for free. It is fully functional, but
will remind the user at regular intervals that he should register.
After 30 Days it will expire, and not allow any more connections to
be made. The registration can be made simply via one of the registration
partners.
